The Sutton Trust is making the ‘American Dream’ a reality

Young people across the UK are realising their dream of studying in America thanks to the Sutton Trust’s US programme which gives bright, state school students a taste of life at an American university.

American dreams

Earlier this year 43 pupils secured places at top American universities, including Harvard, Yale and Princeton, thanks to support and guidance from social mobility charity the Sutton Trust.

The Trust’s chairman, Sir Peter Lampl, said: “Our US Programme is a life-changing experience so I’m delighted that so many young people from low and middle income backgrounds have benefited from it this year.

“The 43 talented students will enjoy a broad and varied curriculum and, with generous financial aid packages on offer, will graduate from some of the world’s best universities debt-free.

“I hope more young people will look to their success and realise that a university education in America is well within their grasp.”

US Programme

The Sutton Trust’s US programme, now in its fifth year, is delivered in partnership with the US-UK Fulbright Commission. Students attend a one week summer school in the US with introductory events and application support in the UK before and after.

The programme provides participants with a wide range of activities to help them make the right decisions about higher education in the States.

53% of the students who have benefitted from the programme come from households earning less than £25,000 a year, while 86% will be among the first in their family to go to university.
